A career in Hairdressing is not for the faint-hearted. Often involving long hours on your feet and dealing with high expectations from customers, this demanding yet rewarding career is perfect for those with bags of energy and a love for making others look and feel their best.

Nationally recognised Hairdressing qualifications

Qualification: Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
Duration: Approximately 18 months
Start Dates: Flexible. Students can start at any time of the year.
Course Content: This qualification will cover a range of skills and knowledge such as cutting, drying, styling, colouring and lightening, relaxing and perming as well as shampooing and consulting with clients.

Progression Opportunities

Students could progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing or Barbering or they could undertake specialised courses in specific aspects of hairdressing or broader skills such as team leading.

What to Expect as a Hairdressing Apprentice

Apprenticeships are highly beneficial to beginners as they offer a very involved and intense approach to learning, working in a real salon alongside experienced professionals to build up their skills and portfolio.
Just like any industry the world of hairdressing is always changing. You’ll need to stay creative, focused and ahead of the latest trends so you can stand out from the crowd; even seasoned hairdressers can benefit from continued learning. The great thing about hairdressing is that you really never stop learning!
To succeed in the industry you’ll need to have some of the following skills, or be willing to put in work to develop them:

  • Great timekeeping
  • The ability to listen
  • Creativity
  • Communication

Career opportunities

There are a variety of avenues you can do down once completing your Apprenticeship.
You can continue to progress at your current salon from a junior to senior stylist or maybe you want to want to open your own salon and establish yourself, which our Business Start-up team can help you with.
You could also become a freelancer where you could earn your own commission or combine your hairdressing skills with other beauty techniques such as gel nails etc.
