Many owners, managers and directors think that to grow their business they need more marketing, a better website, the latest machinery, or more staff.
Whilst those things may aid growth, to get what you really want out of a business you need to put a plan into action and follow it every working day.
Many businesses don’t stop to think what their customers want or whether they are preparing for new trends or market demands. Companies fail to reach their full potential, or even cease trading, by not thinking strategically.
For example the video rental business Blockbusters didn’t fail because of competition from Netflix, they failed because they didn’t think about what their customer really wanted. Your profits need to be tied to what your customers value.
When was the last time you or your team considered the following questions?
• Where are we now?
• Where do we want to be?
• How will we get there?
• Who must do what?
• How are we doing?
Strategic planning can have an immediate influence on your company or organisation. Not every situation can be foreseen but you can make decisions and react to changing market conditions when you have a clear objective in mind. Having clarity about what you want to do, who you need to help you to do it and how to get there will help you to focus limited financial and human resources. The key to success is to be proactive not reactive and establish your direction.
