Following a public consultation, Lidl UK have begun construction on a new store in St Helens.

The store will take approximately seven months to complete and will include an in-store bakery. This new development is expected to create numerous part time and full time employment opportunities for the local area.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, Stuart Jardine, said: “There’s been much anticipation for this new Lidl store and it’s great that we are now in a position to break the ground and start the build.

“We are extremely grateful for all the support that we have received so far, and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”

Lidl was the first supermarket to announce it would pay workers the National Living Wage, which came into force last month.  A quarter of Lidl workers will benefit from the new hourly rate, which has increased to £9.75 for workers aged 25 and over who are working full time.

The new store will be located on Park Road, Blackbrook.

The German supermarket chain currently have over 600 stores in the UK and their new St Helens premises comes as part of a growth plan to increase the number of stores to 1,500 nationally.
