It can be a testing time for the inexperienced business owner when a new venture is not preforming as well as they had expected it to. Such was the situation facing the owner of a device repair business when, despite offering a comprehensive and guaranteed service it just didn’t take off. Fortunately help was at hand through the Chambers Business Growth Programme, and the future is now looking very bright.
Tech Guys North West Ltd carries out repairs on devices from mobile phones to laptops. It was formed by IT consultant Neil Smith, who after being made redundant, decided to gain formal qualifications in device repair and follow his long held dream to start his own business.
Neil said: “I had many years IT experience and enjoyed repairing phones as a hobby so it seemed the logical choice for my new business.
“My vision was to run a quality device repair business. The industry has got quite a bad reputation, and a lot of people just use You Tube videos and teach themselves. The results can be a bit hit and miss. I wanted to be the best, I really enjoy doing it, and there’s no better feeling than giving a repaired phone back to a customer and them saying “Wow It looks brand new,” the feeling is fantastic.”
After a spell of working from home the business moved to its first premises in Lea Green. Unfortunately Neil’s message wasn’t reaching its targets. The business was struggling, and he realised he needed some support.
Neil said: “I’d always wanted to go it alone, and was too proud to ask for advice. But it became evident that I was never going to do it on my own, I just didn’t have the experience. That’s when I approached the Chamber for help, and I have to say it was the right decision.”
Funded by the European Regional Development Fund and St Helens Council, St Helens Chamber’s Business Growth Programme is designed to help businesses operating in the B2B sector who want to grow and take on new staff.
A business diagnostic with the Chamber’s advisor, revealed that the main issues were ineffective marketing and sales techniques. Through the Business Growth Programme, the advisor arranged for Neil to work with both a sales and a marketing consultant.
Neil said “The advice I received was invaluable. The consultants were really knowledgeable and easy to work with, and most importantly they understood the needs of a small business. It was nice to work with experts, knowing that you’re not going to be hit with a big bill at the end of it”
The support identified several issues with Tech Guys sales and marketing processes, and led to some significant actions. A change of company name, some rebranding, an updated website, new products and most significantly, a change in premises location.
Re-branded as Tech Guys 360 Ltd and sporting a striking new logo, the company now has a fully equipped repair laboratory in Rainford Village Hall. It also has an interactive website where customers can identify their device and obtain the price for any repairs in an instant.
Neil said: “We’ve done a lot in a short space of time. I’ve had to take a step back, and it really is like a fresh start now, but with so much more knowledge, and that’s a huge difference. If I’d known what I know now when I started, it would have saved a lot of heartache.
It’s the best thing I could have done, without knowing it I was sinking fast. Now sales are increasing every day, and I’m confident I’m on the right track to success. I would 100% recommend other businesses to use the Business Growth Programme”
