A Haydock precision engineering company has joined in the fight to protect people from the COVID-19 virus. It has designed, and is now manufacturing a new high quality full face shield. As well as being a defence against the virus, the product has helped the company to continue operating in these difficult times.
Mechlam Precision Tooling Ltd, has been making precision mould tools for the best part of twenty years. Its tools are used in the manufacture of plastic parts for a wide range of motor vehicles. End users of it products include many of the worlds most well-known car manufacturers.
The downturn in business due to the Coronavirus, led to company directors Martin Atherton and John Burley exploring other avenues, to minimise disruption to the business, and to preserve jobs.
“We had a bit of a light bulb moment” says Martin. “Obviously there is a shortage of good quality PPE, and with many sectors slowly returning for work, we concluded that quality face shields would be in high demand for a long time to come”
Mechlam employs a team of top class design engineers, and they were set the task of designing the components for the shields, and the tools to produce them.
Says Martin, “Once we made the decision to proceed, it was all hands to the pump to get the designs in place and the mould tools manufactured. We are fortunate to have a fantastic team of designers and engineers working for us, they have all put their hearts and souls into getting us to the stage whereby we now have our first products coming of the line.”
The venture is very unfamiliar territory for Mechlam, and is a significant change to the business model that has served the company well for the last twenty years.
“We would never have looked at something like this in normal circumstances” says Martin. “But as a business we have always progressed by being adaptable and innovative. Designing and making the product was the easy part. Getting a finished product to market however, is a completely new ball game to us. But we have a fantastic top quality product that we’re very proud of, and we are really looking forward to the task.”
