St Helens based Longworth Building Services is reducing its carbon footprint after receiving support through St Helens Chamber’s Business Growth Programme.
The company is one of the UK’s leading envelope contractors and has been involved in a variety of complex building projects.
Business Development Manager, Ben Parker, said: “Longworth has been established for over 150 years. We have grown a lot over the last three years, doubling our turnover from six to £12 million.
“The core of the business is metal roofing and cladding, but over the years we’ve extended our skills and expertise and become renowned for being an industry innovator, expanding into new types of roofing and cladding systems, including full building enveloping.”
In 2017 Longworth accessed the Chamber’s Business Growth Programme, providing them with expert guidance to help them achieve their environmental objectives to reduce their carbon footprint.
Ben said: “We’ve already installed solar panels on the roof of the building which generate 50% of our electricity every year.
We wanted to generate a small income for the business and set a standard for our sub-contractors to follow.
“We now have a biomass plant as well, which delivers all of our heating and we’ve installed LED lights throughout the building. We also have a new energy efficient fleet of vans.”
As well as being good for the environment, by reducing its carbon footprint, Longworth Building Services is also sending out the right message to its clients.
Ben explained: “It’s important to do your bit. The onus is on us as a sub-contractor to be maintaining the same environmental standards as main contractors. We don’t think there are many contractors our size that are as conscious about reducing their carbon footprint.
“I couldn’t recommend the Business Growth Programme highly enough. The ease of working with the Chamber, accessing information and ways you can improve the company has been excellent.”
Funded by the European Regional Development Fund and St. Helens Council, St Helens Chamber’s Business Growth Programme is designed to help businesses operating in the B2B sector who want to grow and take on new staff.
