June marks 12-months since golf and leisure operator, Green Circle Estates, became the council’s local golf operating partner after taking on the day-to-day running of Sherdley Park Golf Course on a 150-year lease.
The Park Bar & Kitchen
In September 2018, a planning application was submitted for a wholesale renovation and a stunning new clubhouse now stands which wouldn’t look out of place at a top overseas golf resort. But the best part is, it’s not exclusive to golfers – park users and dog walkers can enjoy the fine facilities, too.
Costing just over £1m, with its built in new pro shop, The Park Bar & Kitchen offer a delicious menu of hearty fayre at reasonable prices – while the new terrace area is sure to become the go-to destination in St Helens on a sunny day.
Golf course
A significant amount of money has been spent on improving the golf course facilities and playability. The course layout has been completely changed following feedback, with the old 13th hole – nicknamed ‘Mount Sherdley’ because of its tiring uphill walk to the tee – now the first hole, and a number of golf buggies are now available for golfers to get around the course with ease.
Meanwhile, plans are in place to start the next phase of works on the golf course which will include upgrading four of the green complexes – to include new drainage and irrigation systems to improve all year-round playability.
Operations Manager, Craig Coley, told St Helens First: “We’ve got a very different model to what most people are used to with a traditional private members golf club. We aim to provide first class facilities, on par, if not better, than the region’s best private members golf clubs but providing affordable, pay & play golf and accessible membership for everyone.”
“In April 2019 we launched our multi-club membership, with annual prices from just £450. Our members can enjoy unlimited golf at Sherdley Park, Allerton Manor and Kirkby Valley Golf Clubs. In addition, we have competitive green fee prices for non-members and some great deals at the driving range if you wish to practice your swing before hitting the course.”
