Graduate Charlotte Brown secured a permanent position at Longworth Building Services Ltd in July following on from her six month placement as part of St Helens Chamber’s Graduate Hub.
With aspirations of one day being a zoo keeper, Charlotte completed a three year university course in Animal Behaviour.
Whilst at University, Charlotte was given the opportunity to work within the industry. Deciding working outdoors wasn’t for her, Charlotte hung up her coat and decided to look into other careers.
Charlotte said; “I graduated from university and saw the Graduate Hub advertised so I thought I’d go along and see what was available.
“I knew I wanted to work in an office as I’m very well organised, so I told them I was looking for an administration or receptionist role.”
Charlotte completed three weeks full-time training in leadership and management, health and safety, first aid, communication skills, CV writing, interview skills and digital marketing at the Chamber before being job matched to a vacancy at local company Longworth.
Claire Cahill, Office Manager at Longworth, said: “When Charlotte first came to Longworth for her interview she came prepared with a portfolio about the business, we were very impressed that she’d obviously done her research.
“Coming from the Chamber we knew she would be well prepared and with a degree, educated to a high level.
“I’d be lost without her, she’s done a fantastic job. From day one there was never any question as to whether we’d keep her on at the end of the six months.
“It was clear I wanted her to stay and progress, there was never a doubt in my mind or the Managing Director’s mind about offering her a permanent position.”
Originally employed in an Administration role, Charlotte has been able to progress into a document control position.
Charlotte added: “I’d recommend the programme to other graduates looking for work because it’s really helped me get to where I am today.
“I was getting nowhere on my own, it helped to have the support from the Chamber with CV writing and interview techniques. There’s not much guidance on what to do after University and you need to find something to do with your life.”
The Graduate Programme is part of the Access to Work programme, which is funded by the Youth Employment Initiative and the European Social Fund. It aims to help match local graduates looking for employment with local businesses, trying to fill skills gaps.
The next programme is due to begin on the 16th October in St Helens and the 23rd October in Liverpool.
