Financial incentives for employers

Business Jobs/Apprenticeships

In recognition of the value young people and Apprentices can bring to our economy, the government has announced a range of new financial incentives for businesses, paid in the form of a grant, to support businesses offering opportunities to young people, as the economy starts to recover from the impact of COVID-19.

With up to £3000 available per Apprentice (depending on age) and no cap on the amount of new Apprentices you can take on, and up to £10,000 available for businesses offering work experience placements, now is the time to start adding bright young people to your business from our pool of ambitious applicants.

Up to £10,000 available for offering work experience placements to traineeship students
When you offer a work experience placement to a Traineeship student, you can get a £1,000 grant for each student to cover any expenses, with up to 10 grants available per business you can get up to £10,000 and benefit from the fresh ideas and energy of a young student, at no cost to your business.

£3,000 grants available when recruiting a 16-18 year old Apprentice
If you recruit an Apprentice between the ages of 16-18, you will receive a grant of £2,000 from the new Apprenticeship incentives announced by the Government, plus an extra £1000 for taking on a young Apprentice. There is also no cap on the number of Apprentices you can hire, so no cap on grants you can receive either!

£2,000 grants available when recruiting at 19-24 year old Apprentice
When recruiting an Apprentice aged between 19-24, you will get a grant of £2,000 through the new incentives. There is no cap on the number of Apprentices you can hire, so grants are unlimited for the next six months – there’s never been a better time to hire an Apprentice.

£1,500 grants available when recruiting an Apprentice aged 25 or over
For every Apprentice over 25 you hire over the next 6 months, your business will get a grant of £1,500 which is uncapped, so you can hire as many Apprentices as you want and can add talented people to your business while benefiting from financial support.

Up to 25 hours/week wages paid for 6 months with Kickstarter grants
If you hire an unemployed 16-24 year old, you can get up to 25 hours of their wages paid for six months. This means you can benefit from the skills of a talented young person while helping your local economy – and you can do so with the minimum of expense to your business in these difficult times.

How does the funding work?
Claims can start to be made by employers for these grants from 1 September 2020. Those claims must be made through the Apprenticeship service.

Once you have hired a new Apprentice, funding is paid in two instalments; one at 90 days after recruitment and one at 365 days after recruitment with payments going into your DAS account.

St Helens Chamber can help you set up an account to receive payments and help you find suitable Apprentices for your business; we will make sure you are ready to take on talented young people in no time.
