Haydock-based company FH Brundle was nominated for a Business of the Year Award at the St Helens Chamber Apprentice of the Year Awards due to their ongoing commitment to developing their staff and investing in young people.

A long established family business, FH Brundle is a wholesale steel supplier with seven branches across the UK. The Haydock branch, covers the whole of the North West from North Wales up to the Cumbrian coast.

Elaine Heaton, Branch Manager, at FH Brundle said: “We are family run business and have been trading since 1889. The business is currently run by Michael Brundle who is a 5th generation member of the family. Staff development is absolutely crucial here and we encourage our staff to take up training and as a result we have a good rate of staff retention.”

FH Brundle recognises the value that Apprentices can bring to a business and have been working with St Helens Chamber to develop their workforce and ensure a stream of qualified staff for the future of the business.

Elaine continued: “The Apprentices have been really good for us, we’ve been able to bring young people in that we can mould to fit the way we think the business should run. Apprentices tend to take on the general ethos of the business, perhaps more so than someone who has ten or twenty years’ experience of working in another company.

“The Apprentices that we have taken on have stayed with us and we have trained them to move on into other roles. For example, one of our Apprentices Jack started with us over a year ago, and we have trained him how to use the forklift and the crane.”

FH Brundle also puts existing staff forward to complete qualifications and feel that the Chamber understands their needs in this area. Elaine said: “The Apprenticeship framework from the Chamber has been excellent in its delivery. All the tutors have been accommodating, especially with fitting the training and meetings around staff responsibilities.”

Andrew Brown, Training Adviser at St Helens Chamber, nominated FH Brundle for the Business of the Year Award. He said: “FH Brundle gives excellent opportunities for staff development. They have taken on numerous Apprentices and developed them into hard workers who have become an important part of the company.

“The company dedicates time to developing its staff and gives them full support along the way.”
