Zac Wallace, Business Development and Marketing Executive at Mercury Hampton, is described as “invaluable” and “an asset” by the company’s Managing Directors in his very first Marketing role; all within a few months of completing the Digital Marketing Study Programme at St Helens Chamber.
Like many other young people, Zac struggled with the inflexibility of a classroom environment, but Zac is now excelling with the practical on the job training of an Apprenticeship.
Zac commented: “I got reasonably good GCSE’s, but I didn’t really apply myself in school and when it came to deciding my next step I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go.
“My parents let me take a year out of school before taking that step, so I could work out what I really wanted to do; so I became a landscape gardener to earn some money in the meantime – which taught me a lot about hard work!”
It was during this year that Zac was approached by Career Connect for a discussion about his next steps and what career path could work well for him.
Zac continued: “I told Career Connect that I’m interested in marketing, sales, developing businesses and finding new and creative ways to do things; so they gave me a leaflet about the Digital Marketing Study Programme at the Chamber and I booked an appointment to find out more.”
After finding out about all of the amazing benefits of a Study Programme Zac realised that this was a much better fit for him and allowed him to pursue the career he aspired to have.
Zac explained: “On the Study Programme we were given driving lessons, a bus pass, the opportunity to go to Germany and had many more fantastic industry days; all while not having to be confined to a classroom, which was perfect for me.”
During the Programme, Zac found that the Study Programme broadened his horizons, both personally and in his career.
Zac commented: “The amount of support was remarkable, there wasn’t anyone who wasn’t approachable and happy to discuss your ideas with you.
“As well as teaching me about many parts of business and marketing which I’d never come across before, the Study Programme made me realise I had the drive to work hard and succeed in this industry and I’d never been abroad before so that was a great experience too.”
As part of the Digital Marketing Study Programme, Zac completed a placement at Mercury Hampton where he worked closely with management and impressed them with his ambition. After completing his work placement Zac was taken on as an Apprentice and is now completing his Level 3 Apprenticeship in the company.
In his role at Mercury Hampton, Zac is responsible for all things outbound; managing all social media and speaking with clients and businesses over the phone to resolve any queries. Zac has also delivered CRM training to staff at all levels and is thriving in his role.

Zac added: “Without the Study Programme I wouldn’t be here talking to some of the biggest manufacturing companies in the world, so I’d recommend anyone to do it! All the Chamber staff we’re really helpful and you’re fully supported all the way through the Programme.”
