After being away from the world of work for over 10 years to bring up her children, Jennifer decided now was the right time to get back into employment, but was finding it difficult to step back onto the career ladder at the level she had stepped off.

Jennifer explained: “It has been a challenge to try and get back into employment. I have been out of the world of work for so long that my old references are now invalid.

“I had previously been employed as a Business Analyst for Siemens and wanted to get back into my old career. Even though I have great knowledge and skills, I was still finding it difficult to gain employment at the level I left at.”

During her job search, Jennifer came across Reignite Bootcamp on social media. Reignite Bootcamp is targeted at individuals who are enthusiastic about getting back into work after a career break. The three week course offers support and training whilst gaining accredited qualifications to get back into work.

Jennifer added: “I had seen the post for Reignite Bootcamp on Facebook and emailed for more information. I then received a call from a member of the team inviting me in to the Chamber to meet with a Career Coach within the next few days.

“I met with Mike, a Career Coach at St Helens Chamber. We discussed my background and what I was looking for. He gave me more information about Reignite Bootcamp and how it could help me return to work. Mike was very good at his support role, he gave me all the information I needed and was able to answer any questions I had.”

Jennifer enrolled on to Reignite Bootcamp and completed a range of courses from Project Management, to Digital Marketing, enabling her to build on existing knowledge and previous experience, and gain insight into new areas of interest.

After completing the programme Jennifer was given the chance to apply for local job vacancies upon her successful completion. However, it was ‘TechUP’ a programme being delivered by Durham University, in conjunction with Edge Hill, Nottingham and York Universities, that caught her eye.

The programme is open to women with degrees in any subject, with an aim to develop under represented communities of females to become the next generation of digital talent.

Jennifer explained: “I am so grateful for the opportunities that were offered to me from Reignite Bootcamp. I was successful to be 1 of 100 women to be accepted on to TechUp and I wouldn’t have known about the programme if it wasn’t for the Bootcamp.

“TechUp provides a great deal of emphasis on women and technology. Older women, women deciding on a mid-career change and women who are returning to work after a career break due to care.

“Many companies are missing a big trick when hiring new staff. Returners bring a great deal of maturity and calm to the workplace, tapping into the huge wealth of experience they have would be beneficial to many companies.”
