Suzanne secures a new role and increases her confidence after facing redundancy Back to News Index

Suzanne O’Connor worked with HM Revenue & Customs in St Helens for over 30 years, but faced redundancy, along with many other colleagues when her office was scheduled to close. Starting Point visited Suzanne’s office to help her and the many of her colleagues who were facing this difficult transition.

Suzanne explained: “Lots of us had worked in the same job for many years, so were daunted at the prospect of applying for new jobs!

“Starting Point came into our office and gave us plenty of useful information and guidance on what steps to take next. They helped me create an effective CV and reviewed my career options on-site while we were still at HMRC and delivered an Interview Skills workshop which helped me gain confidence going into interviews.”

Once Suzanne’s redundancy was confirmed, Career Coach Mike worked closely with Suzanne to create an action plan, which provides a range of information to guide her through the redundancy process.

Suzanne said: “At the appointment we used online National Careers Service job profiles to ensure my CV was tailored to reach my job goals and to identify any useful training or qualifications.

“I was helped to apply for Rapid Response Service funding to pay for me to complete a Sage 50 Payroll course, and also was pointed towards the digital training at Clickworks; so I completed Level 1 IT and Introduction to Digital Marketing too.”

Due to Suzanne’s commitment to training and strength in getting right back into work after a traumatic time, she is now happy in a role at The Association for Family Therapy in Warrington. Suzanne stepped into the role of Executive Assistant and supports the chief executive, the chair, board and committees in delivering the organisations strategic objectives and manages the AFT office.  She is very much enjoying her new career path.

Suzanne commented: “Without doubt the support I received through National Careers Service has played a major part in my recent employment success. The continued help and support they provided prior to and after my redundancy was second to none. I wouldn’t like to think where I would be without the support they offered me.”

Not only did the courses and support help Suzanne into a job after working with the same employer for 30 years, it also helped her personally. She built her confidence and gained more motivation to achieve her goals, with the courses broadening her knowledge and skill set.

Suzanne added: “After receiving the support I needed, I felt my confidence improve. I was able to meet new people and talk to them about their experiences which gave me a greater perspective and a willingness to achieve my goals.”
