Digital Marketing Students’ German Adventure Back to News Index

Sponsored by Bericote Properties the five day adventure took in a whirl wind tour of the city and some of its top industrial and cultural landmarks.
On their first full day in Stuttgart, the students visited Kaufmännischen Schule 1 (KS1), a college that specialises in vocational subjects and had the chance to experience lessons in different subjects, including logistics, tourism, retail and more. Students also learned about how the German Apprenticeship system works in comparison to our system here in the UK, before being given a short tour of the city centre.
The students also had the opportunity to visit the Mercedes Benz Museum. The tour took students back in time showing how Mercedes cars were developed back in the 1920’s and their evolution into the cars we see on the road today.
Another stop on their packed itinerary was logistics giant Schmalz and Schӧn, to learn more about international exportation of a wide range of products and the additional services the company offer to their clients; including quality assurance, guaranteed on-time delivery and customer service that is second to none.
The students also visited a smaller business, InTension, to see the contrast of how the two firms operated.
Student Adam Wilcock commented: “It was amazing to see how both large and small businesses operate in Germany. We were shown demonstrations of projects they were working on, including an app that allows tractors to direct themselves and a project that one of the student staff was working on.”
Aside from their industry visits, students had the opportunity to enjoy dinner at Carls Brauhaus with the Vice Principal and Head of Logistics from KS1 and talk about their studies at St Helens Chamber and plans for the future. Naturally, there may have been a beer or two involved!
An important part of the visit was to the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce; where students took part in a discussion about Brexit, learning how involved other countries are in one of the biggest political events of the 21st century. They also discovered the level of influence the Chamber has over business in Stuttgart in comparison to that of St Helens Chamber; as in Germany it is mandatory for every business to be a member of their local Chamber of Commerce.
After an exciting week, students returned home with fresh insight into the world of work and full of inspiration for their future careers.
Adam added: “It was wonderful to see how people in our twin town live and work, as well as benefiting from educational tours in the city. Seeing how both large and small businesses operate in Germany was a truly unique experience, leaving us with food for thought on different industries we could move into following the end of the study programme.”
St Helens Chamber and all the Digital Marketing students would like to thank Bericote Properties for sponsoring the trip; they all made fantastic memories and learned many valuable lessons, with many wanting to go back again. Thank you also to Uli, Uwe and Thomas from the Kaufmännischen Schule 1 who provided our students with great hospitality.
