Thanks to funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Adult Education Budget we are pleased to be able to offer this course free of charge – provided that attendees were aged 19+ as of 31/8/21 and live within the Liverpool City Region.

This course provides an introduction to book-keeping practices and will teach you all you need to know about maintaining accurate records; including how to complete financial documents, record cash and credit transactions, understand petty cash systems and much more.

Assessment method:

Candidates will be required to complete one externally set computer-based test. This will consist of a number of practical tasks. The duration of this is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The qualification:

This qualification is aimed at adults who want to develop skills and knowledge required for working in the accounting sector. The AAT Access Award in Bookkeeping offers students at Level 1 the opportunity to develop practical bookkeeping skills. This qualification may help students to move on to further study in either accountancy or bookkeeping with AAT, offer a route into employment or be of interest to those already in employment.

Course structure:

Understand the role of the bookkeeper

  • Duties and responsibilities of a bookkeeper
  • Ways to keep information confidential
  • Importance of working with accuracy

Understand financial transactions

  • The buying and selling process
  • Basic bookkeeping terminology
  • The dual effect of transactions

    Process customer and supplier transactions

  • Prepare sales invoices and credit notes
  • Check purchase invoices and credit notes
  • Record sales and purchase invoices and credit notes in the books of prime entry
  • Identify outstanding amounts for individual customers and suppliers

Process receipts and payments

  • Enter receipts and payments into a cash book
  • Use the cash book to calculate closing amounts of cash in hand and cash in the bank
  • Check the closing amount of cash in the bank against the closing balance on the bank statement

On successful completion of the course learners will achieve the AAT Access Award in Bookkeeping level 1. You may then decide to progress onto our Level 2 course.
