The Local Growth Hub connects you to the range of business support available on a local, regional and national level providing a single access point for businesses to discover the advice and support they need to flourish.

As the Local Growth Hub for St Helens, we deliver face to face business support, tailored to local needs.

Coronavirus Support for Businesses

Future Innovation Fund

£3m Future Innovation Fund pilot programme has been established by the Metro Mayor to support Liverpool City Region’s small and medium sized enterprise community. The fund aims to incentivise SMEs to innovate, adapt and diversify in response to the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic and its associated impacts on the economy and society. Grant funding will cover eligible costs between £25-£75k on a strictly needs-justified basis.

Who can apply?

Any SME based, or with significant operations in the Liverpool City Region. Businesses must be able to demonstrate a strategically aligned and viable project plan, capability to deliver, value for money, social impact and a clear need for grant funding

Businesses must:

  • Be registered as active on Companies House on or before 31st March 2020
  • Have paid all relevant taxes your company is liable for as at the date of application submission (unless deferred in line with HMRC’s COVID-19 support measures)
  • Prior to funding being awarded, businesses will not have received more than £180,000 of public funds in the three years preceding the date of application; and agree to participate in:
    – webinars or similar events to showcase the innovation activity funded by the grant and promote future calls under the fund;
    – peer to peer engagement and mentoring activity to other businesses where appropriate; and
    – promotional marketing and communications activity.

What can I use the grant for?

Any grant funding awarded will be used to fund activities with demonstrable impact within 6 months from date of the grant award.

Eligible projects must demonstrate alignment to the following priority areas for the Liverpool City Region:

  • Delivering a sustainable industrial future: businesses seeking to take advantage of new opportunities in materials, manufacturing and engineering.
  • Open health innovation: business initiatives to enhance health & wellbeing, during and following the pandemic.
  • Global cultural capital: activities to support the resilience of LCR’s cultural vibrancy during and following the pandemic.
  • Zero carbon economy: businesses pioneering sustainable approaches to living, travel and doing business in a post-pandemic world, for example linking to the circular economy, mitigating single-use plastic and non-reusable PPE.
  • Tech for good: businesses that use technology and data to drive growth and improve society, including but not limited to “smart city” applications, high performance computing, data science and AI.
  • Digitalisation: initiatives in any other sector that will yield a clear improvement in business productivity, adaptability and/or diversification.

Businesses can not use any grant funding for:

  • Working capital and other ordinary course business purposes
  • Operating directly or indirectly in the tobacco industry
  • Production of products/services used solely in the defence industry
  • Operating in the gambling or adult entertainment industries
  • Any activities with impact on religious movements
  • Any illegal activity
  • Any activities with an adverse impact on human or animal rights.

The second round will close on 19th October 2020.

Business Resilience Support for SME’s

In order to respond to the economic challenges our City Region businesses are facing, BDO LLOP have extended their contract to continue to deliver a pro-active programme of engagement, advice and support with SME’s across Liverpool City Region over the next few weeks focusing primarily on COVID-19 related issues.

The aim of this work is to ensure that businesses across Liverpool City Region have access to professional advisory support to aid them through the challenges they are facing due to COVID-19.

Be the Business Mentoring

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Be the Business has released a Rapid Response Cohort Mentoring Programme. This 12 week mentoring programme matches SME key decision makers with mentors from leaded firms who can help to explore the immediate impacts, be a good sounding board and assist in rebuilding business once the immediate crisis is over.

Stabilise your business. Adapt your strategy. Grow sustainably.

Sustain is a 6-week course to stabilise, adapt and sustain your business during crisis.

You had a clear strategy for growth before Covid-19, but everything has changed

  • Sales have dropped off
  • Cashflow is tight
  • Your people are feeling the strain
  • Your customers are feeling the pinch
  • Your supply chains are disrupted
  • Or, you’re learning to manage higher demand than ever

Two hours a week

We know how valuable your time is. Sustain was designed to fit into your schedule. Just two hours a week for six weeks. Each of the three modules includes an interactive online workshop and peer group sessions, followed by access to digital resources and workbooks to work through in your own time the following week.

The 6 week course includes:

  • Instant access to other leaders facing the same challenges
  • Online workshops to help you to adapt, build resilience and strengthen strategies
  • Resources and digital workbooks to keep you and your team on track

All course fees for Sustain are covered by the Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor’s Business Growth Package, elements of which are being redirected to support the local business community to recover from the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peer Networks

The Peer Networks programme is for SME leaders that want to stabilise, grow and develop their organisation with the support of like-minded entrepreneurs from across the Liverpool City Region’s business community.

It provides a virtual community for business leaders to get together to discuss their collective business challenges; think-up solutions to them; and plan long term recovery and growth.

Peer Networks is a peer-to-peer networking programme for SMEs that is delivered locally. Through interactive action learning, we enable you to discuss your own challenges, gain and reflect on valuable feedback and implement practical solutions to overcome them. From finance and HR to sales, marketing and more, our expert facilitators give you the flexibility to create a trusted support network that works for you, helping you to build and strengthen your business and improve its overall performance.

If you’re an SME that meets the following criteria, then you’re eligible to take up a place on the programme:

  • Operated for at least a year
  • Five employees or more
  • A turnover of at least £100,000
  • The aspiration to improve and grow their business
  • The ability / potential to scale up or start exporting (ideal attributes)

Small Business Leadership Programme

The programme supports business resilience and recovery from the impact of COVID-19. It helps small and medium-sized businesses to develop their potential for future growth and productivity. Participants will develop strategic leadership skills and the confidence to make informed decisions to boost business performance. The fully-funded 10 week programme will be delivered online by small business and enterprise experts from world-leading business schools.

The information which we collect will, in addition to the business details, include name and job title of officers and individuals who are named contacts, including work telephone numbers and email address, and where provided, mobile telephone number.  The information you share with us will be used by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, partners, selected service providers and funders (e.g. local authorities, chambers, Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)) to record support provided, for reporting purposes and for subsequent evaluations of the programme.  The information will be held both electronically on a central database and hard copy paper form in a secure filing system at St Helens Chamber.  We recognise the need for commercial confidentiality and the privacy of individuals, and ensure that any information will be kept securely and not shared outside the partnership or the selected providers without your prior agreement.
