Why Smoke-free Workplaces
  • 1981: First major study on passive smoking and lung cancer by Takeshi Hiriyama (Japan)
  • 2004: The Scientific Committee on Tobacco & Health (SCOTH) reviewed evidence on passive smoking
  • 700 deaths per year

No Smoking Signage
  • The minimum signage requirement for buildings is a ‘No Smoking’ notice which:
  • Is at least 230mm by 160mm (9x7)
  • Displays the international ‘No Smoking’ symbol
  • States that: it is an offence to smoke or permit smoking on the premises
  • Displays the name of the person to whom a complaint may be made

  • Residential homes
  • Long term residential mental health units
  • Prisons
  • Offshore platforms
  • Hospices

Failure to comply
  • Will be a criminal offence
  • Individuals may be fined a fixed penalty of £50
  • The manager or person in control could be fined a fixed penalty of £200 if
    • They allow others to smoke in no-smoking premises
    • Fail to display warning notices in no-smoking premises
    • Refusal or failure to pay may result in prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500
