A St Helens manufacturing company, Kleen and Green Motoring Solutions, has been crowned the winner of the 2010 Merseyside Innovation Awards.

The business, which got off the ground with the support of St Helens Chamber’s Entrepreneur Kick Start project, funded by St.Helens Council, has developed a device capable of reducing vehicle fuel costs by up to 40% and cutting carbon emissions by 50%.

Inventor and business owner, George Heeley, said: “I have been working on the device full time for the last nine years. As I am an engineer, the prospect of coming along to the awards and presenting my product took me way outside my comfort zone. I really didn’t expect to win, so I’m over the moon.

“The awards will allow us promote our company on a larger scale so that we can encourage businesses to drive towards a low carbon economy in the region.”

In recognition of the award, George received a £10,000 cash prize, in addition to £4,000 worth of advice from some of the region’s leading business advisers and the offer of space at Liverpool Science Park.

Ann Holcroft, Business Start Manager at St Helens Chamber, said: “We are delighted that George’s hard work has been recognised by this award. This product is an achievement not only in its design, but also in the benefits it offers for the environment. The large cost savings it can create make it a must for all haulage and logistics firms both locally and nationally. We hope that winning this award will be a springboard for George to develop the business to its full potential.”

George is currently working with a number of businesses on projects to help reduce the emissions of their fleet vehicles, including St Helens Council, DHL and United Utilities.
