Pre-start Workshops

This series of workshops has been developed by St Helens Chamber to provide guidance on key topics prior to business start-up. On successful completion you will gain an Institute of Leadership and Management Level 2 Certificate in Preparing for Business Enterprise.

The Essentials
‘The Essentials’ presents the structure of the workshops and introduces the Certificate. It also provides an overview of the main areas to be considered when starting a business. The workshop will help you to assess your suitability for starting and running an enterprise and to assist in your decision making.  It also allows you to explore the implications of starting up and running a business.

Marketing
‘Marketing’, covers the ‘4P’s’ Product, Place, Promotion and Price, and helps you learn how to get and keep customers, also it includes details of how to check your sales and profit projections within the financial areas of the business plan. You will also learn how to work out your price. Learn about competitive advantage, how to design a market research questionnaire and about customer service.

Finance
‘Finance’ looks at the importance of working capital to your business. It also looks at the Profit & Loss, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet and helps you gain an understanding of how they are used to interpret and manage business performance. You will also use the idea of break even to better understand your business.

Business Planning
‘Business Planning’ demonstrates how the information gathered during the previous workshops is put together in your business plan to create the final document. Your business plan is also used for the Level 2 Certificate in Preparing for Business Enterprise.

Bookkeeping and VAT
‘Bookkeeping’ shows you how to comply with the requirements and minimise the hassle of bookkeeping, do it yourself, or not? You will find out if you need to register for VAT and if so, how to manage it.

Taxation and National Insurance for your business
This workshop is delivered by HMRC and provides advice and guidance on recording business information and data retention

The Pre-start Workshops will help you to develop your business idea into a fully workable business plan that can be used:

  • To access borrowing requirements, e.g. Bank loan/overdraft;
  • To increase business profitability and long term survivability;
  • To ensure that you set off in the right direction.
