You don’t have to understand the intricacies of
horse racing to have a good time at Haydock Park Racecourse,
according to managing director Adam Waterworth, who
believes there is a lot more to the site than bets and
wagers.
As
well as being internationally renowned for its racedays,
Haydock Park Racecourse is becoming increasingly popular
as a venue for conferences, weddings, exhibitions and
even wakes.
“Our key message is that people can come here
for a good time. People don’t have to understand
racing to enjoy themselves here. Our conference and
banqueting facilities are just as crucial to our success
and they are available 365 days a year,” explains
Adam, who chairs the St Helens Tourism and Leisure Business
Network — part of the City Growth St Helens Strategy,
an initiative aimed at driving wealth creation in St
Helens which was launched at the racecourse last November.
The racecourse, which employs 60 permanent staff and
up to 500 people on racedays, has recently been the
venue for a four-day British Gas conference and the
Chamber’s Annual Dinner for the last three years
and has also hosted conferences for major banks, building
societies and local councils.
“We can cater for parties from ten to 500 so the
range of companies and organisations we have are often
quite diverse,” he says.
“We also have weddings booked for every weekend
during the summer as well as a fair number of wakes
for people who were keen race goers. Their families
often ask to scatter their loved ones ashes on the course.
Adam is a firm believer in developing masterplans for
future developments and these include hosting major
events to pull in large crowds. In September some 20,000
people attended Haydock Park for Truckfest, a major
exhibition of trucks and vans.
The 105-year-old course, which lies in 127 acres of
parkland, underwent major developments in 1999 with
the building of its centenary stand and there are plans
to extend and improve the facilities further in the
next five years.
“We are very fortunate to be sited on a fantastic
road network in the heart of a region with a great sporting
heritage,” said Adam. “It is a very exciting
time with everyone pulling in the same direction. It
is great to be working closely with the business community
in St Helens.”
