Building on success

A St Helens manufacturing firm — part of the world’s largest steel company — is providing materials for some of the country’s most prestigious building projects...

Haironville TAC, a leading supplier of roofing and cladding to the building industry, counts B&Q and IKEA among its clients and has secured contracts on major hospital and school
building projects across the country.

The company, which relocated from Widnes to the Abbotsfield Industrial Estate in St Helens in 1997, is part of the Arcelor
Group, the world’s biggest steel producer. The Arcelor Group was formed following the amalgamation of three steel groups from
Spain, France and Luxembourg.

“We created around 25 jobs recently after investing £1.5m in a new flat panel yield line,” explained Managing Director Adrian Murphy,
who joined the company after a career with Pilkington.

The manufacturing plant, which employs 75 people and has an annual turnover of £16 to 17m, buys in steel coil from its parent
company and then roll forms and shapes the metal to produce cladding and roofing panels.

Sometimes the panels are insulated or foam injected, depending on the requirements of the client. The panels are then sold to
cladding sub contractors.

“We are concentrating our efforts on commercial projects such as hospitals and schools at the moment including hospitals in
Coventry and Swindon and school development schemes across the country,” explained Adrian.

“We have spent the last year consolidating the business and, as the sole respresentative of Arcelor Construction in this country, we
would like to invest further. We’ve received lots of support from St Helens Chamber who have been very helpful.”

Haironville TAC, which secured £250,000 in Objective One funding early last year, also received its Investors in People award and its
ISO quality assurance mark.

Adrian would now like to see the cluster of St Helens manufacturing companies, who all provide products for the building industry, working together. “There is a natural synergy between us and I believe there are lots of benefits to linking up that are not currently being exploited,” he added.
